Where to begin?

Excited to announce the humble beginning of this resource open to all who are keen to start making use of scripting as well as to extend their knowledge especially for users already utilising the scripting options.
This is a resource from a beginner to fellow beginners and I hope that we can all learn together to enhance the workflow we have in developing our publications. For experienced users, you are very much welcome to give advice, suggestions of even better ways to achieve tasks that we will be trying to cover in each of our set projects.
For the rest of us, where do we start? I frequently fire up Opus to mess about in the tool, many times with no apparent goals at hand, could be I am trying out something that has been posted on the DigitalWorkshop forum or from the examples folder of the application, most times I find joy in how the tool achieves this and others, I raise my fist to the monitor, mostly because I don't know how to achieve a given task and where no answer appears to have been featured in the forum. this humble blog aims at addressing this by allowing us all to work through some example outcomes specifically trying to achieve this in script as opposed to the normal task system in opus, and I do hope that we can learn together and make our time using the tool more productive.

The plan is to have a written tutorial say every fortnight, with several snippets appearing in between the written release, mainly in the form of screencast. Still trying to figure out how to post files to "blogger".

To start off I would like us to compile some areas of scripting that should get us off in this quest.
Please use the feedback for this, will trawl through the forum for already requested scripting learning resources.

EO',

I think it's a great step... for discussion and chiming-in. However, 'where to draw the line' between discussing the state of things, and solving obstacles? What belongs in the Forum vs. this parallel channel?

It'd be ashame to put 'code' here that might be better leveraged at DW site.

Topics? One of the first I hope is 'how to assess your script-ability'... as a way to identify productive building steps.

Thanks Larry for your comments.
What I was hoping for us to do is work through projects, and add on to the projects as people contribute ideas and directions to an item that is being worked on. The forum is excellent when you need a specific query to be answered hence from the context of a beginner, there is no real "useability" of a given piece of code unless they have an opportunity to see it fit in the greater scheme of things. What I am hoping to do is update the forum on completed projects and also have the videos and project files there too. I believe this can spur the learning and exploring of the tool for casual users, in the scripting context.

Looking forward to seeing that in action. Sounds like this group would be a 'sandbox' for sandcastles. :-)
I'd suggest also putting a Link somewhere here to the Forum Tutorials section, where 'getting started' scripting chapters are posted.

Thanks Larry,
Too muddy here, just found a nice pile of sand, looking for the right consistency, and the castle will be underway in construction.

I think this blog is a very good idea. At least it may help to advertise for Opus a little bit. This seems to be necessary because I think DW is not very good in advertising for their own product. Especially here in germany Opus is more or less completely unknown.

This blog is a good idea.
Perhaps we should begin with something very simple. The first program in any language is always the 'Hello World' example, so what about a simple page with a button. Press the button and a text object appears saying 'Hello world'
this would show hot to attach a script to a button.

Just found this site and all I can say wow! Coolest thing for long time. I use opus but, always get stuck when it comes to scripting!
You have my full support

I think you must be mad starting this. Just because DW can't be arsed to write tutorials or support their own product - why should you?

I agree - it's a sad reflection on a company that has become increasingly lethargic over the last couple of years.

I have not had a chance to start on this as yet, new job hunt and all, but should be ready soon.
If you need to contribute, just drop me a line on k0tik0ti(at)yahoo.co.uk.

Polly, I came across http://opusnewbies.blogspot.com/ that I am basing this opus blog and hope I and other contributors can make it a lively place to place and post tutorials. I know the software vendor might or should be doing this but lets not wait for them if we can help ouselves, I personally find I learn best by sharing the little we know... DW is aso welcome to contribute if they make time for it...

Enough idle chat, lets get started .. I know that I for one will really benefit from this blog.

A suggestion, there are four tutorials on opus site to teach scripting. Why not continue and develop number 5 (cant remember exact numbers produced already). We can then, add/discuss progress.
